Why A-Level is a big step up from GCSE (depth, pace, problem-solving demands)
A-Level represents a significant jump in difficulty from GCSE, and many students underestimate this until they’re already struggling. At GCSE, questions are largely structured around recalling and applying individual facts or methods in fairly predictable ways. At A-Level, the same topics are explored in far greater depth, and questions require students to combine multiple concepts within a single problem, often without being told which method to use.
The pace also increases substantially. Teachers cover content more quickly, with less time spent repeating or consolidating each topic before moving on. This means small gaps in understanding can compound quickly if they’re not addressed early.
Finally, A-Level demands genuine problem-solving rather than pattern-matching. Instead of simply applying a formula, students need to interpret unfamiliar scenarios, work out which approach to use, and justify their reasoning clearly, particularly in Physics, Chemistry and Maths. This shift catches many students off guard, even those who found GCSE straightforward.
Why many students who did well at GCSE suddenly struggle?
It’s very common for students who achieved top grades at GCSE to suddenly find themselves struggling at A-Level, and this isn’t a reflection of ability. It usually comes down to a mismatch between the study habits that worked at GCSE and what A-Level actually demands.
At GCSE, many students can succeed through memorisation and repetition of familiar question types. At A-Level, this approach breaks down because questions are designed to test understanding, not recall. Students who haven’t built strong foundational understanding in earlier years can find that cracks start to show once content becomes more demanding.
There’s also less individual attention available in most school settings, larger content coverage in less time, and higher expectations around independent study. Without a clear strategy to close these gaps early, students can quickly fall behind, lose confidence, and struggle to catch up on their own. This is exactly where structured, targeted support makes the biggest difference.
Past Paper & Mark Scheme Strategy
My method: working through real past papers
My teaching is built around real past papers, not just textbook questions. Past papers show students exactly what they’ll face in the real exam, including the specific way questions are phrased, the type of reasoning that’s expected, and the level of detail examiners are looking for in a full-mark answer.
Rather than working through questions in isolation, I use past papers to identify patterns across multiple years, showing students how certain topics are tested repeatedly in similar ways. This helps students walk into the exam feeling like they’ve already seen a version of most questions before, which builds both competence and confidence.
Teaching students how examiners award marks
Understanding content is only half the battle. Many students lose marks not because they don’t understand a topic, but because they don’t know exactly what an examiner is looking for in their answer. I teach students how mark schemes work in practice, including the specific keywords, steps and levels of detail required to secure every available mark.
This includes showing students real examples of high-scoring and low-scoring answers to the same question, so they can see the difference for themselves. Over time, this trains students to think like an examiner, structuring their own answers in a way that captures maximum marks, even under exam pressure.
Identifying recurring question types per topic
Exam boards tend to test the same core concepts in a limited number of ways year after year, even if the wording or context changes. Part of my approach involves analysing past papers to identify these recurring question types for each topic, so students aren’t caught off guard by unfamiliar phrasing.
Once a student recognises a question type, they can quickly identify the right method to use, rather than starting from scratch each time. This significantly speeds up their ability to tackle exam questions accurately and confidently, especially under timed conditions.
